IRFU INTERNATIONAL GIRLS TOURNAMENT

As part of the activity surrounding the Women's World Cup, Naas Rugby club hosted the IRFU International Girls' tournament on Saturday, August 12th. 340 girls representing 18 clubs from France, Canada, England, Wales and local Irish teams took part in a fast and furious knock-out competition over 4 hours on a beautiful day at the Kildare club. Even though this was the first game of the season for everyone, the standard of rugby was exceptionally high, with the outstanding team from Languedoc, made up of the top players from the south of France, running out as clear winners in the Under-18 competition. In the Under-15 competition, Naas overcame an early pool-stage defeat against Cardiff Quins to beat the Cardiff girls in the overall final.

Once the final whistle had blown, around 150 of the girls joined in an impromptu Macarena on the main pitch in front of the highly vocal crowd.

The day was rounded off by a women's match, Naas Barbarians (players from Naas, Barnhall and Tallaght) overcoming a powerful Welsh outfit from Whitland RFC. Even then, the girls and women hadn't had enough rugby, and they played on with a game of touch.

A great start to what we expect to be a massive season for women and girls right across the country.
