2020/2021 will be our tenth consecutive season of girls’ rugby at the club, and over that time we have grown from a handful of players in 2010 to over 100 playing regularly. We will, once again, have rugby for every age at the club – Minis, Under 14, Under 16, Under 18 and Women.
Our re-formed women’s team, now entering their third season, will be playing in Leinster Division 3, with every prospect of performing well under the outstanding coaching team of Jenny Murphy and Adam Coyle. The team will be bolstered this year by some returning underage players who have come through the ranks at the club.
Our 18s, 16s and 14s will all be playing in the higher levels of the Leinster leagues which should start in November, with a more local, regional competition in September and October. We have a strong tradition of performing well in these competitions, and we also have a great track record of providing players for the North Midlands and Leinster teams. Last season, two of our players played for Ireland – Katie Ann O’Neill in 7s and Erin King for Ireland U18.
But the numbers, honours and accolades don’t adequately describe the true nature of a group of players and coaches who just love to be involved in all the activity at the club. This is largely down to the culture created by the coaches, who focus on participation as well as performance. 2020/2021 will definitely be a unique season, but whatever this year may throw at us, the women and girls of Naas RFC are ready.
